Haunted in VR

A conversation with Gomze

We spoke with Quentin about his creative practice, personal style, and the ideas behind the work.

The interview

What’s your favourite horror film, and what’s one scene from it that’s stayed with you?

Woah this is difficult, but off the top of my head I would say the last few minutes of the short "Safe Haven" that I watched recently. The short is featured on the V/H/S 2 found footage horror anthologies and it's directed by Gareth Evans, the guy who did the best action movies ever, The Raid 1 & 2. It's about a crew shooting a documentary on an Indonesian Cult, I won't spoil it but the ending it's pretty nuts. Just go watch the whole V/H/S 2, it's really fun overall.

Your artwork mixes creatures, machinery and lots of details! How would you describe your work to someone who’s never seen it? What draws you to putting those things together?

Detailed, organic and silly. I grew up with some old school stuff from the 90s/early 2000 era and my dad had a garage repair shop for motorbikes, he owned tons of shit like sidecar, ATV, cars…I think that if you see vehicles like cars as characters, like in a video game, they are cool as hell. That's it, pure 12 years old kid wired brain. Traumatized by Twisted Metal and the infested tank from Devil May Cry 2.

How do you decide when a piece is finished, especially when there’s room to keep adding more?

I always end up going to far into the coloring, I'm afraid of the empty space, I want to shade everything. I'm trying to work on that currently, be less perfectionist, I want my my spontaneity back.

What are your favourite things to do while creating art?

Freaking out, like jumping from my chair, putting my hands on my head and thinking I just screw everything up. While listening to some music or the weirdest documentary you can find on youtube.

Where do you find inspiration when you're away from your studio?

I like to process the ideas I have already in my brain when I'm away from the studio, or I try to just not think about it, which is very hard.

Is the internet still an interesting place to discover art?

Yeah, for sure, but I think you have to dig your own way to find the true inspirational gems. There are some good curator profiles on Instagram but overall I think they mainly re-share the same stuff over and over. I really miss the Tumblr era for that.

What do you think the next weird internet obsession will be?

Mixed martial arts with robots.
